WHAT IS LIVE RESIN
Live resin is a solvent-extracted cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen flower. It shares the "live" preservation philosophy with live rosin — both use fresh-frozen source material to preserve volatile terpenes that traditional curing would lose. The split happens at the extraction step: live resin uses butane or propane as the solvent; live rosin uses heat and pressure with no solvents.
Live resin was pioneered in Colorado around 2013 by cannabis chemists seeking to preserve the terpene profile that traditional cured-flower extraction lost. It quickly became the premium tier of solvent-extracted concentrates — typically 5–15% terpene content compared to 1–2% in distillate.
Today live resin is the dominant fill for premium vape cartridges. The format scales better than live rosin (industrial solvent extraction is more economical than rosin pressing) while still preserving meaningful terpene character.
LIVE RESIN vs LIVE ROSIN
Both products start from fresh-frozen flower and produce extracts with bright, fresh aromatics. The differences are real but smaller than many consumers assume.
On purity: live rosin always tests ND (Not Detected) for residual solvents because there were no solvents to begin with. Live resin always has some residual butane or propane (regulated to under 500ppm typically). Both are safe; the distinction is philosophical for most consumers.
On flavor: live rosin generally tests slightly higher in retained native terpenes (4–8%) than live resin (5–15% can include re-introduced terpenes). The flavor is similar, with experienced dabbers reporting live rosin tastes "cleaner" while live resin tastes "louder."
On price: live resin runs $40–$70 per gram retail; live rosin runs $70–$120 per gram. The 40–60% price differential reflects the production yield difference (live rosin yields 5–10% per pound of flower vs live resin at 15–25%).
For premium vape carts, live resin is the dominant fill because the math works at scale. For premium dabs, live rosin is the dominant choice because purity matters more.
