Live resin is a solvent-extracted cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen flower, sharing the "live" preservation philosophy with live rosin but using butane or propane as the extraction solvent instead of heat and pressure. Live resin was pioneered in Colorado around 2013 by cannabis chemists seeking to preserve the terpene profile that traditional cured-flower extraction lost. Live resin retains much more terpene character than distillate or traditional shatter — typically 5–15% terpenes compared to 1–2% in distillate. It's the closest solvent-extract experience to smoking fresh-flower. Because live resin uses butane or propane solvents, it requires a purge step to remove residuals — unlike live rosin which is solventless by definition. The two share "live" source material but diverge entirely on extraction method. See rosin vs resin.
