WHAT IS A DAB RIG
A dab rig is a specialized water pipe designed for consuming cannabis concentrates by vaporization. Rigs differ from regular bongs in three ways: smaller chamber size (less air volume to fill, preserving terpene density per inhale), finer percolation tuned for the lower vapor volume, and a heated quartz banger fitting instead of a flower bowl.
Rigs come in glass, silicone, and electric (e-rig) formats. Glass rigs are the connoisseur standard — borosilicate construction, often hand-blown by named glass artists. Recyclers (a specific rig style with continuous water-circulation) are particularly popular for low-temp dabbing because the vapor cools through multiple percolations.
Common rig sizes: 5–9 inches tall, 14mm or 10mm joint size. Larger rigs handle bigger dabs but waste vapor in dead air. Smaller rigs concentrate the hit but get hot fast.
TYPES OF RIGS
Banger Hangers — The simplest rig style. Single chamber with a perc, joint extending sideways for the banger. Compact, easy to clean. $80–$300 entry.
Recyclers — Two chambers connected by tubing. Water and vapor cycle continuously between chambers, producing extremely cool, smooth hits. The connoisseur standard for low-temp rosin dabbing. $150–$600.
Klein Recyclers — Compact recycler variant with a Klein bottle main chamber. Most popular travel-friendly recycler design. $200–$500.
Mini Tubes / Beaker Rigs — Small bong-style rigs for dabbing. Less specialized but versatile — can dab or pack flower with a standard 14mm bowl swap. $80–$250.
E-Rigs — Battery-powered electronic rigs (Puffco Peak, Carta). Replace the torch-banger workflow with digital temperature control. $200–$400.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Glass quality — Borosilicate glass with even thickness (no thin-walled stress points). American-made glass (US borosilicate) is the gold standard; quality Chinese glass is acceptable for budget builds.
Joint size — 14mm female is the dominant standard. Some smaller rigs use 10mm. Match your banger and carb cap to the joint size.
Percolation — For low-temp dabbing, simpler percs (slits, showerheads) work better than complex tree percs. Less drag means cooler vapor without losing terpene density.
Size — 6–8 inches is the sweet spot for daily dabbing. Smaller is less smooth; larger wastes vapor in dead air.
Avoid — Rigs with super-complex percolation (designed more for flower than concentrate), oversized rigs that waste vapor, and unbranded glass without warranty.
CARE + CLEANING
Rigs should be cleaned weekly with isopropyl alcohol and salt. Pour 99% IPA into the chamber, add coarse salt, plug the openings, and shake. The salt mechanically scrubs while the alcohol dissolves residue. Rinse thoroughly with water.
For glass that’s heavily resined, soak overnight in IPA. Avoid abrasive scrubbers — they scratch glass and create microcracks that fail under thermal stress.
Change rig water after every session. Stagnant water grows bacteria; the bubbling water in a session passes vapor through that water before you inhale.
Store rigs upright in a stable location. Falling rigs are the #1 cause of breakage. Use a silicone rig mat to protect both the rig and the surface.
