Solventless extraction refers to cannabis concentrate production that uses only physical methods — heat, pressure, water, ice, and mesh screens — with no chemical solvents like butane, propane, CO₂, or ethanol. The two main solventless categories are rosin (pressed with heat and pressure) and hash (ice-water extracted and pressed). Solventless is the connoisseur-preferred extraction approach for three reasons. First, purity: there are literally no solvent residues possible. Every solventless COA reads ND (Not Detected) across the full residual-solvent panel. Second, terpene retention: cold-press extraction preserves the volatile terpenes that purge steps in solvent extraction can lose. Third, authenticity: solventless extracts preserve the fullest expression of the starting flower's character. Solventless extraction is harder to scale industrially than solvent extraction — yields per pound of input are lower, and the process is more labor-intensive. This is why solventless commands a price premium.
