Cannabis indica refers botanically to cannabis plants originating from the Central and South Asian region, particularly the Hindu Kush mountain range spanning Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. Morphologically, indica plants are short (3–5 feet), bushy, with wide, dark-green leaflets, and flower faster (7–9 weeks) than sativas. In modern consumer culture, "indica" is shorthand for a body-heavy, relaxing, "in-da-couch" felt effect profile. This association is partially justified — indica-morphology cultivars often lead with myrcene and caryophyllene terps, which correlate with sedative and grounding effects. But the indica-as-body-heavy rule is oversimplified. Terpene profile predicts felt effect more reliably than the indica/sativa label. Modern commercial cannabis is overwhelmingly hybrid, with pure landrace indica becoming rare. See indica vs sativa for the full comparison.
