CBN (cannabinol) is the breakdown product of THC oxidation. Old cannabis — flower or concentrate aged at room temperature with air exposure for months — develops progressively higher CBN as the Δ9 THC oxidizes. CBN is mildly psychoactive (about 10% of Δ9 THC's CB1 affinity) and carries a strong anecdotal association with sedation and sleep support. This is why "old weed" has a reputation for putting you to sleep. Research on CBN for sleep is preliminary but growing — several sleep-focused hemp brands market CBN-enriched gummies and tinctures. CBN is typically present in fresh cannabis at less than 0.5% and climbs over time. Some cultivators intentionally age specific cultivars to concentrate CBN for sleep-product production.
