WHAT IS A QUARTZ BANGER
A quartz banger is the heated dish where cannabis concentrate is placed and vaporized during a dab. Bangers replace the flower bowl on a dab rig. Quartz is the dominant material because it heats evenly, holds heat well, doesn’t impart flavor, and is heat-shock resistant.
Common banger styles: standard (open-top dish), thermal (double-wall for heat retention), flat-top (better for terp pearls and carb caps), reactor/blender (asymmetric for vortex airflow), and slurper (multi-chamber design for low-temp puddle dabs).
Quartz purity matters significantly. Cheap bangers (sub-$30) are often made of low-grade quartz that flashes white, breaks, or imparts a mineral taste. Premium bangers (Quave, Toro, Highly Educated) start around $60–$120 and provide consistent, even heating.
BANGER STYLES
Flat-Top Banger — The standard for low-temp dabbing with terp pearls and spinner caps. Flat bottom dish lets pearls spin freely. Most premium bangers are flat-top.
Thermal Banger — Double-walled quartz construction. Heats slower, holds heat longer, gives extended dab window. Good for relaxed-pace dabbers.
Slurper Banger — Multi-chamber design with bottom dish + side cuts. Pearls spin in lower dish; the side cuts pull vapor through the dab puddle. Best for low-temp puddle dabs of saucy concentrates.
Reactor / Blender Banger — Asymmetric airflow design. Carb cap directs air through angled openings, creating a vortex that spins the dab puddle. Premium connoisseur format.
Standard Open-Top — Simple cylindrical dish. The basic format — works for everything but isn’t optimized for any specific technique.
BUYING + SEASONING
New bangers should be seasoned before first use. Seasoning clears manufacturing residues and stabilizes the quartz surface for long-term performance.
Seasoning protocol: heat the empty banger red-hot with a torch (45–60 seconds), then plunge into a bowl of cold distilled water. Repeat 5–10 times. The thermal cycling clears any residual quartz dust and tempers the glass for repeated heating.
Match joint size to your rig — 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm. Female joints fit on most rigs. Match angle (90° vs 45°) to your rig style.
Buy quality. A $60–$80 quality banger lasts years with proper care. A $20 budget banger may flash white or crack within months. The cost difference amortizes quickly.
CLEANING
After every dab: q-tip swab the banger while still warm. The residue dissolves easily in warm quartz; once cooled, residue carbonizes and is much harder to remove.
Weekly: deep-clean by submerging the banger in 99% isopropyl alcohol for 10–30 minutes. Scrub remaining residue with a q-tip. Rinse with hot water. Air dry.
Never use abrasive tools — wire brushes scratch quartz, creating microcracks that fail catastrophically under thermal stress.
For stubborn carbon buildup, the “chazzed banger” problem can sometimes be solved with the “low-and-slow” technique: heat the banger to 350°F (just visible heat shimmer), let it cool fully, then iso-soak. Repeat until clean.
