THE TEMPERATURE PHILOSOPHY SPLIT
Low-temp dabs (510-580°F): preserve volatile terpenes, deliver flavor-forward hits, leave a small puddle of cannabinoid-rich reclaim that you can re-vaporize.
High-temp dabs (640-800°F): vaporize everything in one shot — including the lighter terpenes that burn off as harsh smoke. Bigger vapor cloud, no puddle, less flavor.
The connoisseur scene has been firmly in the low-temp camp since around 2017, when better banger designs and torch techniques made consistent low-temp dabs accessible.
WHY LOW-TEMP WINS ON FLAVOR
Cannabis terpenes have boiling points between 154°C (309°F) and 209°C (408°F). At low-temp dabs (266-282°C / 510-540°F), the lighter terpenes vaporize cleanly without burning. At high-temp (340-425°C / 640-800°F), they pyrolyze — chemically transform via combustion — into harsh smoke compounds that taste burnt.
A side-by-side test: same rosin, two dabs. Low-temp dab tastes distinctly lemon, gas, cream (whatever the cultivar terps are). High-temp dab tastes generic — burnt vegetation with an underlying cannabis funk. The terpene character is gone.
WHEN HIGH-TEMP MAKES SENSE
Distillate carts: distillate has minimal terpenes anyway, so the temperature penalty is smaller. High-temp ensures full cannabinoid vaporization with no waste.
Group sessions: high-temp dabs produce more visible vapor, which is the social signal in group settings. Some hosts will load high-temp for the visual; the connoisseur takeaway gets diluted.
Tolerance break recovery: a high-temp dab delivers a stronger hit faster, which matters if you have a high tolerance and need volume.
LOW-TEMP TECHNIQUE
Heat banger to red-hot (10-15 sec at full torch). Pull torch. Wait 60-75 seconds for the banger to cool to ~540°F. Drop dab. Cap with carb cap. Slow draw 30-60 seconds while rotating the cap to direct vapor over the dab puddle.
After the dab, a small reclaim puddle remains. Q-tip swipe while warm, save the reclaim if you like, and you’re ready for the next dab.
HIGH-TEMP TECHNIQUE
Heat banger to red-hot. Pull torch. Drop dab within 10-15 seconds (banger still ~700°F+). Cap immediately. Pull hard — the dab will vaporize in 5-10 seconds with a strong vapor cloud.
No reclaim left behind, but flavor is washed out and the cannabinoids deliver as a quick hot hit rather than the slow flavor arc of a low-temp.
THE RECLAIM ECONOMY
Low-temp dabbers accumulate reclaim — the puddle of partially-vaporized cannabinoids and terpenes that remains after the initial dab. Reclaim isn’t waste. It can be re-vaporized at a slightly higher temperature, eaten (it’s already decarboxylated, so it’s edible), or jarred and stored.
High-temp dabbers don’t generate reclaim — but they pay for it in flavor.
