WHY TEMPERATURE MATTERS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE
You can have the best concentrate in the world and ruin it with a 50°F temperature error. Each concentrate type has a sweet spot where (a) the cannabinoids fully vaporize and (b) the terpenes don’t burn off. The window is narrower than people think — usually 30-50°F wide.
Below the sweet spot: incomplete vaporization, milky/spotty hits, residue puddle, wasted product.
Above the sweet spot: terpene burn-off, harsh smoke, charred reclaim, lost flavor.
LIVE ROSIN — 510-540°F
The lowest target on the menu. Live rosin’s terpene profile is dominated by light monoterpenes (limonene, pinene, ocimene, β-myrcene) with boiling points between 154-176°C (309-349°F). Dab too hot and these volatile aromatics burn off as the cannabinoids vaporize.
At 510-540°F (266-282°C), the dab is mostly terpene release first, cannabinoid release second — exactly the flavor-forward arc connoisseurs want from solventless.
COLD-CURE ROSIN (LIVE OR CURED) — 530-560°F
Slightly hotter than fresh-press live rosin because the cold-cure process redistributes terpenes and slightly densifies the texture. The added 20°F gives the dab enough heat to vaporize the now-buttery texture cleanly.
For most modern Royal Reserve drops at our price point: 540°F is the canonical setting. Adjust ±10°F based on cultivar.
CURED ROSIN (NON-LIVE, TRADITIONAL) — 540-580°F
Cured rosin has a heavier terpene profile (more sesquiterpenes — caryophyllene, humulene) with higher boiling points. Dabbing at 540-580°F gets the gas notes to release without the harsher overcooked taste.
LIVE RESIN (BHO/PHO) — 540-580°F
Similar window to cured rosin, slightly less heat-sensitive than live rosin because the hydrocarbon extraction process already homogenized the texture and terpene profile. Diamonds + sauce variants benefit from the higher end (570-580°F) to fully melt the diamonds.
DISTILLATE / CURED-RESIN / SHATTER — 580-640°F
Distillate has very few volatile terpenes (those were stripped during distillation, and any back-added terps are typically more heat-stable botanicals). Heavier, slower-vaporizing extract.
Distillate dabs at low temps (sub-580°F) puddle and waste — the high cannabinoid concentration without supporting volatiles needs more heat to vaporize cleanly. 600-620°F is the canonical sweet spot.
HOW TO HIT THE RIGHT TEMP WITHOUT A THERMOMETER
Torch the banger until it’s glowing red, then time the cooldown. From red-hot, a 4mm-bottom banger reaches:
~640°F at 30 seconds
~580°F at 45 seconds
~540°F at 60 seconds
~510°F at 75 seconds
Everyone’s torch + banger combo varies — calibrate yours by timing 3-4 cooldowns and using a temp gun once or twice. Once you have your number, the timing becomes muscle memory.
E-RIG AND E-NAIL EQUIVALENTS
On Puffco Peak Pro: "Optimal" preset (~485°F first phase) is great for live rosin; "High" (~545°F) for cured/cold-cure.
On a coiled e-nail with a quartz banger: 540°F display reading typically equals 510-520°F at the dab itself (heat loss through the coil). Set 20-30°F higher than your true target.
