THREE PATHS TO YOUR FIRST DAB
New dabbers face an immediate decision: glass-and-torch traditional rig, electronic e-rig, or starter dab pen. Each has different cost, learning curves, and vapor quality.
Glass rig + torch: $150-$400 starter kit. Best vapor quality, full ritual experience, longest learning curve. The connoisseur path.
E-rig (electronic): $200-$400. Digital temperature control, no torch needed, indoor-friendly, easier learning curve, slightly less vapor quality.
Dab pen: $30-$80. Pocket-sized, simple, much smaller dabs. Best for travel and discretion, not the full dabbing experience.
GLASS RIG STARTER KIT ($150-$300)
For the connoisseur path, the minimum kit:
Rig (5-7 inch borosilicate, 14mm joint): $80-$150. Look for honeycomb perc or simple slit design — avoid overly complex tree percs which add drag without benefit at concentrate vapor volumes.
Quartz banger (14mm, flat-top, 3mm wall): $30-$60. Quave and Highly Educated entry-tier are reliable. Avoid sub-$20 bangers — quartz quality varies dramatically.
Carb cap (bubble or directional): $15-$25. Bubble caps work for any banger. Directional caps work better with terp pearls.
Quartz terp pearls (2-pack, 4-6mm): $10-$15.
Titanium dab tool: $10-$15.
Butane torch (Blazer Big Buddy): $50-$60. Avoid $15 culinary torches — flame inconsistency makes temperature timing hard.
Q-tips + 99% IPA: $10. Essential for cleaning.

E-RIG RECOMMENDATIONS ($200-$400)
Puffco Peak Pro ($400): Category leader. Best temperature accuracy, best accessory ecosystem, Bluetooth app for advanced temp profiles. Premium choice.
Focus V Carta 2 ($250): Mid-tier alternative to Puffco. Good build, simpler software. Best value.
Dr. Dabber Switch ($430): Premium dual-use (concentrate + flower). Larger and more expensive than Puffco.
KandyPens Oura ($300): Compact e-rig with disc-style atomizer. More portable than Puffco.

WHAT TO AVOID ON FIRST PURCHASE
Cheap silicone dab kits ($40-$60): Tempting price, terrible flavor experience. Silicone leaches into hot vapor. Skip these.
Knockoff CCELL hardware: Many disposables and cheap pens use clones of CCELL atomizers. Vapor quality is significantly worse. Look for verified CCELL stamping.
Oversized rigs (12+ inches): Wasted air volume in the chamber means weaker vapor density. Save the bigger rigs for when you upgrade.
Sub-$20 quartz bangers: Quartz quality varies dramatically at the bottom of the price range. Cheap bangers flash white, crack from thermal shock, or impart mineral taste.
FIRST-SESSION TIPS
Start with a small dab. A grain-of-rice portion (~10mg) is plenty for a first dab. The high is 4-5x more potent per dose than smoking flower.
Use low temperatures. 540°F is the connoisseur sweet spot. New dabbers often dab too hot, scorching the terpenes and producing harsh dabs that taste like burned plastic. See our dabbing protocol guide.
Hydrate. Concentrate dabs are dehydrating. Have water nearby.
Don’t mix substances. First dab session shouldn’t be paired with alcohol, edibles, or other intoxicants. Build a baseline tolerance first.
Have a comfortable spot. The peak intensity hits in 1-2 minutes and lasts 30-60 minutes. Don’t dab and try to drive somewhere.
